Surrounded by the Boso Peninsula on the eastern side and the Miura Peninsula on the western side, the entire bay occupies an area of 1320 square kilometers. The major cities, which are located near the bay, include Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Yokosuka and Chibe.
In ancient times, this bay was known as the Edo Bay. It is one of the most historic spots of the country. It was in this place that Commodore Matthew Perry carried out negotiations with the Japanese Bakufu in the year 1850. In fact, this place has been the contact point between the Japanese and the Europeans prior to the Meiji restoration.
The bay is a major economic zone as it houses some of the major ports of the country like the Tokyo Port, Chiba Port, Yokosuka Port and others. Besides this, it has emerged as one of the main industrial sites of the country with the presence of the Keihin Industrial Area, which later was expanded to the Keiyo Industrial Area. It is particularly famous because of the presence of the naval bases of the United States Forces for Japan and the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, which is located over here in the Port of Yokosuka.
Today, the Tokyo Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations located near Tokyo. Tourists can stand at the shore of the bay and enjoy the panoramic view of the blue waters of the ocean.
