Matsuyama Castle in Japan
The historic castle of Matsuyama is one of the few existing flat mountain castles of Japan. The original castle of Matsuyama was built in 1627 by Yoshiaki Katoh, a renowned samurai. The ownership was then transferred to the Matsudaira family who used it for the entire feudal era. Placed atop the Katsuyama hill, the ancient fort is a unique three-winged structure with a number of ingenious gates to protect the main donjon inside. The wooden castle eventually fell prey to the whims of nature, and though the ruins of the burnt building were repaired, the bombs of the Second World War demolished some parts again. The Matsuyama castle has now been restored to its original state and when the ancient dungeons are lit and the castle trees are illuminated at night, the place is indeed a delight to visit.
