How to get Mobile Phones in Japan
Japan is one of the leading countries in mobile technology and usage. Mobile phones are omnipresent and have been constantly growing over the years. Certain features such as games, cameras are constantly being developed and upgraded in mobile telephones. Technology has thus come a long way.

Visitors intending to make a short trip to Japan may find the mobile phone a highly useful tool. Tourists can use the mobile phone to make hotel reservations, accessing travel information and keeping in contact with people in Japan and at home.

It must be noted that due to different technologies used in Japan, mobile phones from your home country including GSM phones are not likely to work in Japan. Visitors traveling to Japan for a short time can rent mobile phones or purchase prepaid phones through various companies, some of which have counters at the airports.

You could rent a cell phone for your trip to Japan. There are a number of cellular operators who offer mobile phone rentals in Japan. Unlike traditional cellular phone rentals option where apart from cell phone rental, you also pay very high charges for incoming and outgoing calls. Most cellular companies allow you to take advantage of the low local rates that the companies offer regardless the length of your trip. The rates charged are extremely moderate and includes unlimited free incoming calls.

In order to get a mobile phone you need to pay for the handset rental and also purchase a prepaid recharge voucher. Cellular companies such as Cellular Abroad offer 3000 Yen initial airtime. You will not receive a phone bill ever since it is prepaid and you will always be in control of your expenditures. If you need more talk time, you can add it by purchasing recharge cards available everywhere. You need to scratch off the recharge card at convenience stores and enter the pin number by scratching off the card on the handset. Incoming calls are always free and you can continue to receive incoming calls even if you do not have any credit on your card.

In order to create a prepaid account of your own you will need a copy of your passport, a documentation of address, preferably a driving license and your contact address in Japan even if it happens to be a hotel address. The papers need to be submitted at least a week in advance before you can use the phone.
