The Yokohama Metro subways play an important role in creating a vigorous community to support the activities of 440,000 passengers per day by connecting the heart of the city to the sub-centers and other districts. The routes, which unify urban areas, extend for a total distance of 40.4 kilometers consisting of four routes, viz. Kannai, Kamiooka, Shonandai, and Azamino. The routes have been steadily expanded while promoting connections to bus routes and area railway networks. In a way, the Yokohama Metro service has come a long way, achieving a major role in developing the areas in which they run.
The Yokohama Subway has been undertaking initiatives to promote customer services and safety measures for the benefit of the passengers. Every year station volunteers are recruited to help elderly or challenged persons who are traveling to work or school, by escorting them to platforms, carrying their packages, or getting tickets for them. Municipal subways provide cars for the exclusive use of women to prevent any form of harassment and provide them with a sense of security. Every seat in the Yokohama Metro is a priority seat, thus making it a people-friendly subway with the cooperation of the travelers. Safety measures include: firefighting and earthquake alerts.
