Located in the Naka-ku neighborhood, the Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama is one of Japan's premiere sightseeing destinations. Moreover, it is almost a landmark in the city of Yokohama. Better known as the Big Wharf, the local name for the destination is Osanbashi Pier. In fact, the word "Osanbashi" translates in English as 'Big Wharf'. The Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama also stands as the sentinel in the region of the Tokyo Bay at the mouth of the Port of Yokohama. Built in the year 1894, this pier is quite an old construction in the city and so holds a long cultural legacy. After its completion the Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama was christened as the "Yokohama Harbor pier". The Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama stood for a long while, unrivalled, as the biggest pier of Japan. As a result of this, the Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama was also the biggest trading port. With trade the wharf became a gateway for foreign transaction and led to the influx of foreigners into the city of Yokohama. Tough, with time and the mushrooming of several modern state-of-the-art ports have sprung up, neither of them can match up to the glory that the Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama once held. Yet the port still sees a lot of shipping traffic, though tourism too has become a major revenue earner for the port. The Big Wharf (Osanbashi Pier) in Yokohama is open everyday between 6:00am and 10:00pm.
