Hailed as the "Swan on the Pacific Ocean" since its creation in 1930, the Nippon Maru in Yokohama reigned under the title until the year 1984. The Nippon Maru in Yokohama also called the 'Barque Nippon Maru II' was a sailing ship that served as a training ship for novice sailors. The Nippon Maru in Yokohama has been responsible for training several of the nations most efficient ship personnel between 1930 and 1984. The Nippon Maru in Yokohama is currently the cynosure of a museum by the same name.

Positioned at the center of a Memorial park in the city of Yokohama, the Nippon Maru is a ship museum that is open to the public for inspection. The most unique feature of the ship is the fact that it remains preserved in its original build. One can still see the Captain's cabin and Officer's salon, which are the special attractions of the ship-museum. Visitors to the Nippon Maru in Yokohama can also get a feel of what it is to lead a seafaring life. There are live features like deck washing and sail display which also encourages the participation of the visitors onboard the ship. The Nippon Maru in Yokohama also has a marine classroom. Almost ten times a year, on special occasions; the 29 sails of the Nippon Maru in Yokohama are unfurled. The Nippon Maru in Yokohama remains closed on all Mondays other than those that are also Public Holidays and between 29th of December and the 31st of December. The hours of operation vary from season to season; while the opening time is 10:00am throughout the year, the closing time during the months of July to September is at 6:30pm, and in the months of November to February it shuts gates at 4:30pm.
