The Taya Caves in Yokohama is an artificial man-made sanctuary built to propagate a deviating stream of Buddhism. Built beneath the Josenji Temple, this underground sanctum housed preachers of the Buddhist Shingon Mikkyo sect. The Shingon Mikkyo sect was a Japanese sect who practiced mystical Buddhism. Along with the preachers, the Taya Caves in Yokohama also provided shelter to many of the sect's followers and disciples. In the Taya Caves in Yokohama the followers of Mikkyo trained the disciples into practicing an austere and ascetic mode of life.
