Geography of Yokohama

The capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama is situated in the Kanto region on the western coast of Tokyo Bay. The second largest city of Japan, Yokohama stands as a commercial core center within the Greater Tokyo Area. Once a primitive fishing village, Yokohama today has a population over 3.6 million. It’s a major port destination and one of the major industrial, business and travel hubs of Japan, attracting tens of thousands foreign visitors every year. Nestled quietly on an inlet along western side of Tokyo Bay, which is at a distance of 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Tokyo, Yokohama is easily accessible from Tokyo by train and ferry services and expressways and roads via the city of Kawasaki.
The topography of Yokohama region is completely hilly in nature especially
along it suburban areas, as the city is placed along the hills of Tama and Miura.
The Tsurumi River and the Sakai River are the two noteworthy rivers that pass
through this wonderful region. The Tsurumi River unites with the Gulf of Tokyo
while the Sakai River flows into the Gulf of Sagami. Yokohama witnesses a mild
and pleasant weather all round the year. As placed in the midst of the Japanese
Islands along the Pacific Coast, Yokohama is subjected to high amount of rainfall
especially in the months of June, September, and October.
