Nogeyama Zoo Yokohama

The Nogeyama Zoo is a park that includes within its campus a zoo, a Japanese garden and broad, tree-lined pavements. Called the Nogeyama Zoological Gardens of Yokohama, it constitutes over 1500 animals, mammals, birds and reptiles encompassing over 250 species. The bear cage and elephant compound are the twin attractions of the place. The Japanese garden has a carp pond with brightly-colored koi. Japanese cherry blossoms or sakura and yellow azaleas in spring are reminiscent of the royal court gardens.

Tree-lined boulevards circle the park, thus making the place the hub of flower-viewers, against the milieu of the merchant's villa in the Meiji Era (1868 - 1912) - viz. the situation of the park. The zoo in the park, which was opened in 1951, is home to more than 830 animals and is popular with children. With its renovation completed in 2002, there is the Nakayoshi Hiroba or Nakayoshi Plaza where visitors can interact with tiny animals, and the Animal Box which allows them to learn all about the natural world while having fun.

The explanatory boards have been translated into English, which is easier to follow. Admission to the park is free, thus making the Nogeyama Zoo one of Yokohama's most popular sightseeing spots.
