Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia Yokohama

Japan - Fukuoka - Kobe - Nagoya - Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Yokohama -
Located between the wards of Midori and Asahi, the Yokohama Zoological Gardens or Yokohama Dobutsuen or the Zoorasia, as it is called, is a planned wildlife park of 53 ha. It is meant to complement the 103 ha Yokohama Dobutsu-no Mori Park. This facility includes the botanical gardens and is to be the largest of its kind in the Archipelago. The name Zoorasia was chosen from the 3188 suggestions that were made by the citizens of Yokohama.

Zoorasia is a combination of zoo and Eurasia so as to express fellowship with the international nature of the zoo and Yokohama itself. Fortunately, Zoorasia is a far cry from the cages, concrete and sad animals of many zoos. Themed on life-coexistence and balance with nature, the zoo has been designed to replicate the natural habitats of the animals. A stroll around the place will take you through different 'climate zones', each recreated painstakingly with fitting architecture and landscape.

The visitor will find themselves journeying through the Asian Tropical Forest, which houses Indian elephants amongst the lush undergrowth. The Subarctic Forest has special fir trees sheltering indigenous habitat like Red Pandas, Polar Bears, Yezo Arctic Hares etc. You can also see Humboldt Penguins and the Eurasian Otter. The Oceanic Grassland is the place where you can watch the activities of Red Kangaroos and Emus from the adjacent restaurant. The venues of Japanese Countryside and the Amazon Jungle are bound to delight you all the more with the Giant Anteaters, Ocelots, and Woolly Monkeys.
