Besides housing the Kanagawa Prefectural Government offices, the Yokohama Municipal Government offices, and Kanagawa Prefectural Police Headquarters, Kannai is also the home of major business centers as well as important government offices.
Kannai is the home of international trading companies and diplomatic missions since 1859, with the inauguration of the Port of Yokohama. With the opening of this port there was a sudden boom of western culture in Kannai. Osanbashi Pier built in 1894 beside Kannai, has been serving as an international dock for Yokohama. In fact things like ice cream, beer, and gas lamps were first introduced in Japan by Kannai. The remnants of modern western architecture, built during the 1920s to 1930s still flank the Kannai streets.
Besides the water ways, Kannai also has a very good railway networks. The city is connected with all the major cities of Japan by wonderful road as well. The main railway stations that connect Kannai are: Kannai Station, Ishikawacho Station, Bashamichi Station, Nihon-odori Station, and Motomachi-Chukagai Station.
