Motomachi Shopping Street was made during the inauguration of Yokohama seaport in 1859. When Yokohama village was divided into two districts Motomachi came into existence. These two villages were Japanese business district and a foreigner's residential district. In January 1860 the Yokohama villagers resettled in a nearby village called Motomura. In the following month "Motomura" was renamed as "Yokohama Motomachi."
The main occupation of the people of Motomachi was agriculture and fishery during the early period. However, in 1875 the foreigners began moving into Yamate residential district. They began to travel daily from Yamate residential district to Kannai business district. Soon flower shops, clothing stores, milliners, western furniture stores, bakeries, cafes, and curiosity shops filled the streets.
