Religion in Kuwait very much influences and defines the culture in Kuwait which includes the lifestyle of the people living there, their customs, traditions and Kuwait cuisines. The effects of modernization has made changes in the way of thinking of the localities and certain style of their housing, dressing, work culture and handicrafts but still other aspects of the Kuwaiti lifestyle have remained unchanged and reflects the traditional Islamic mannerisms for example consumption of acohol and pork are prohibited in Islam and so are considered illegal in Kuwait. The constitution of Kuwait states that "the religion of the state is Islam and the Sheria shall be a main source of legislation" making Islam the official religion of Kuwait. There is no doubt regarding the fact that Islam is the sole powerful motivating force that binds the majority of the Kuwait population and is also the main religion in Kuwait. In Kuwait people find it difficult to separate the social and political life from the influences of religion. Islam is the official religion in Kuwait and the important festivals and events in Kuwait include Eid in Kuwait, Ramadan in Kuwait, Hala February in Kuwait, Liberation day in Kuwait and National day in Kuwait. Most Kuwaitis are Muslims except for some Christian Kuwaiti families which would be around half a dozen. Islam is the predominant religion in Kuwait, practiced through out the country and so most of the national holidays are on Muslim festival days. Islam followers are again divided among several sub groups. Among the sub groups in Islam, Sunnis form the majority of Muslims and Shias make up only around 15% of the Muslims. Apart from these, there are also many other small sub groupings. Islam being the main religion at Kuwait, one will find many mosques in the region among which the most famous is the Grand Mosque in Kuwait. Apart from that there are also some churches in Kuwait like the Holy Family Cathedral in Kuwait and Our lady of Arabia Church in Kuwait, built for the Christian residents.
