The River Oriental
The River Oriental, situated right on the Kamo River, south of Shijo on Kiyamachi,
is an impressive new development combining the best of old and new. The stunning
three-story construction consists of a complete refurbishment of a traditional
Japanese ryokan or inn and the addition of a modern European-style annex. The
imaginative menu is inspired by South East Asian cuisine with a distinct Japanese
lightness of flavorings.
Most dishes on the menu range between JPY1, 000 (Indonesian Fried Rice) and
JPY1, 700 (Korean Barbecued Lamb). Caesar smoked chicken pizza with dried tomatoes,
basil & Parmesan 1300, Sushi rolls with crab, avocados & fish roe 1300,
Blue fin tuna spring rolls, Vietnamese style 1000, and Roast medallion of lamb
on mashed potatoes in Thai coconut sauce 3500 yen are also available. The River
Oriental is fully licensed. Drinks include Draught Heineken 650, Wine 650 yen
(glass), 3200 (bottle), cocktails 900 yen
Didi
On Higashioji Street, a five-minute walk north of Kyoto University, you will
come across this smoke-free eatery. Indian, other Asian and original dishes
are served here. Original spice-based dishes are reliably good. Daily lunch
is 750yen. There's a good selection of vegetarian fare, and numerous appetizers
including not only Indian food, but pan-Asian cuisine such as tofu steak and
miso potatoes. We really enjoyed the chapatti open sandwich with lassi.
