Extending from the mouth of South Esk River to the Trevallyn hydro electric dam, Cataract Gorge Reserve is a popular tourist destination in Launceston. Cataract Gorge Reserve is also known as the Gorge and is completely natural in its formation. Located close to the bridge is the First Basin, which serves as a popular swimming place during the summer time. The picturesque Kings Bridge, which runs across the gorge, was constructed in 1890s.

Even though Cataract Gorge Reserve is located only two minutes away from central Launceston, it feels like a place which is light years away from the decadence of civilization. The part of Cataract Gorge Reserve which is on the northern side of the basin is known as Cliff Grounds. Towards the southern side is located a 50 meter swimming pool for young children.

The northern part of Cataract Gorge Reserve is known as the Cliff Grounds. It is richly adorned with many ferns and exotic plants.

There is a provision for a chairlift to cross the gorge. With a length of 308 mts, this chairlift is considered to be the longest single span in the world. The chairlift was built in 1972.

Cataract Gorge Reserve promises to provide various activities like fishing, water rafting, walking, swimming and rock climbing.

The First Basin in Cataract Gorge Reserve was the site of a popular annual event called the 'Basin Concert'. Over the years the lack of funds caused the annual event to be called off for good. Cataract Gorge reserve was also the popular venue for Kayaking Slalom Championships; for this purpose the water from the dam used to be released.

Visitors who love to walk can follow the numerous tracks; they can then treat themselves to a sumptuous lunch in Basin Restaurant. The restaurant is fringed with a picture perfect Victorian Garden.
