Tamar Valley blooms with numerous colorful hamlets and charming towns beside
the scenic Tamar River. The enchanting Tamar Valley is also a site where quality
wine is grown copiously. Tamar River is actually an estuary and is completely
navigable in all its length. Cruises along Tamar River are extremely popular and
available all the year round.
One of the chief attractions in Tamar valley is Beaconsfield. In was in the
Cannage Tree Hill of this town that gold was first discovered in the late 1870s;
it was this finding that heralded the gold rush. Apart from a few historic buildings,
tourists are also drawn by the Mining work that is still carried out in Beaconsfield.
Also located is the Grubb Shaft Museum which has some interesting exhibits.
Located on the eastern side of River Tamar is George Town, which is
known for some wonderful Georgian buildings; some of the famous ones being Old
Watch House, and St Mary Magdalene Anglican Church.
To the north of George Town lies Low Head, which has many old navigational
lead lights for ships. Tourists may visit Maritime Museum and the Pilot Station-
the oldest in Australia- in the region. East Beach situated near George Town
is a wonderful place for surfing.
Tourist in Tamar Valley can also follow the Tamar Valley Wineroute which trails
lazily along the 20 vineyards in the region. Pinot noir and chardonnay are the
main varieties of grapes grown in the region. Further, there are other popular
tourist places like Rosevears where one can try a hand at wine tasting in Strathlynn
Wine Centre; for bird lovers Waterbird Haven Trust is a must visit.
Tamar Valley can be reached via road from Launceston as well as from Devonport.
The Valley is lined with numerous Motels, Lodges and Hotels where the visitors
may be assured of a comfortable stay. The restaurants in the Tamar Valley too
are equally good.
