Macau Ching Ming Festival

Ching Ming Festival is also recognized as 'Remembrance of Ancestors Day' or 'Grave Sweeping Day' among the Chinese in Macau. Celebrated on 105th day after the winter solstice or the 15th day from the Spring Equinox, usually occurring around April 5 of the Gregorian calendar or April 4 on every kleap year, the festval is known as Clear Brightness Day or Tomb Sweeping Day in the European references.

Ching Ming Festival is an official public holiday in Macau. The families visit their ancestors or relatives' graves to pay respect. They clean the tombstones and put fresh flowers and three glasses of wine before the graves. People burn joss sticks and paper objects, expecting that the dead will receive these on the other side. Modern amenities like cars, money, mahjong sets and even cellular phones also put in to flames. The fpeople of Macau also make roast piglets, fruit and other food to put before the deceased. These delicacies are used in the family feast held in the evening.Though the celebration is mostly a family affair, yet the scale of festivity makes it one of the national festivals in Macau.
