Macau Population
Macau population is predominantly Chinese. More than 95% are Chinese. They comprise Cantonese, Hakka, Shanghainese, Fujianese and Chinese descendents from Southeast Asia and away. Of the remainder 2% is of Portuguese or Macanese (mixed Chinese-Portuguese) descendants. A small portion of Filipino and Thai nationals also inhibits the island. Taking care of long cultural ties with both China and Portugal, the languages of nations are accepted as official language. However, the population of Macau speaks various languages like Portuguese, Mandarin, English, Thai, Fujianese, Filipino and several local languages like Cantonese and Patua.
Population of Macau has one of the longest life expectancy in the world. The birth rate, death rate, the total fertility rate and infant mortality rate are among the lowest in the world. The high growth of population is also attributed to the influx of mainland immigrants as well as overseas workers. The age structure of the Macau population is unevenly distributed. People in the category between 15 to 64 years constitute a whopping 75%. Where as only 8% is above 65 years. Population growth rate stands at 0.87% per annum. The birth rate and death rate are respectively 8.04 births and 4.23 deaths per 1,000 populations. Life expectancy is about 82.03 years. The net migration rate is 4.86 migrant(s) / 1,000 population.
Population of Macau is mostly Buddhist. More than 50% embrace Buddhism. Roman Catholics constitute 15%. The average literacy is around 94.5%. Female literacy is above 92%. Among the work force the highest number belong to wholesale and retail trade, repair, hotels and restaurants (27.1%) followed by manufacturing (16.4%), construction (8.3%) and financial services, real estate, and other business activities (8.6%).
