The Bronze statue of Xian Xinghai in Macau, China is a tribute to a famed son
of the soil. Built to commemorate the birth anniversary of Xian Xinghai, the
poet laureate of Macau, the statue epitomizes the profound memory of a great
personality.
The bronze statue of Xian Xinghai in Macau is positioned at the intersection
of Avenida Xian Xing Hai and Rua de Berlim streets. Macau commemorates the centenary
of the birth of a Chinese musician by setting up a statue for him. The three
metres high statue is put in front of the Macau Cultural Centre. The image of
Xian Xing Hai composing the song "Cantata to Yellow River" is portrayed
on the bronze figure. Xian Xing Hai was a native of Macau born on 16 June 1905.
He got his education in Singapore at tender age and went to college at Guangzhou
working simultaneously. He studied music in Paris and returned to China in 1935.
At the age of 40, he died in Moscow.
Throughout China Xian Xinghai is respected as the people's musician. He was
regarded by many without doubt as the herald of modern Chinese melody. This
inexhaustible musician composed countless startling agitato pieces. Among his
works Yellow River Cantata is the most famous. His daring and vigorous Yellow
River Cantata is a prolific expression of the unyielding and obstinate spirit
of the Chinese to preserve the homeland. Till his death, Xian Xing Hai composed
more than 200 songs expressing the patriotic spirit and motivating the people
to fight the Japanese invasion in 1937.
