Lou Kao Mansion
Lou Kao Mansion in Macau is located at the #7, Travessa da Sé Street, near the Cathedral. It holds the record of receiving highest number of tourists visiting per day at different historic monuments of Macau. Lou Kao Mansion in Macau was well imbibed in the pages of history. It was once the residence of the prosperous Lou Wa Sio family. An inscription mentioned at the entrance of the palace in the form of a poem mentions its date of construction as 15th year of the reign of Guang Xu, the Qing Dynasty emperor i.e. 1889. Adorned in grey brick, this two-storey Xiguan fashioned edifice is the best-preserved conventional Chinese house in Macau. Lou Kao Mansion is well decorated with brick relief, decorative lattice carvings, plaster ornamentations and mother-of-pearl casements. The pierced ceilings facilitate ventilation. The architecture, even the iron railings, echoes a blend of Chinese and Western structural design.
Lou Kao Mansion was included in the World Heritage List in 1992. After three years of refurbishment undertaken in July 2002, the mansion was opened to the public. The Government of Macau has declared it as the site for art performances during the Macao Arts Festival. The mansion also holds solo and ensemble concerts by the Macao Chinese Orchestra to delight the visitors on Macau sightseeing tour. The Macao Academy of Flower Arrangement Designers organizes its annual flower arrangement exhibition at the Lou Kao Mansion in which participants from Europe and America are invited.
