Malaysian Etiquette

Malaysia - Langkawi - Kuala Lumpur - Penang
Asia, the largest continent of the world, has always been home to diverse traditions, cultures, ethnicities and wonders. The country Malaysia is in the southeastern part of Asia. The beautiful beaches, wonderful natural beauties, soaring skyscrapers and other unique features of Malaysia have given it a distinct identity as one of the favorite tourist spots in the world. The diverse populace of Malaysia has different religious beliefs. The society of Malaysia is rich with diverse ethnic groups, religious practices and other cultural characteristics. Like any other country, Malaysia also has some unique etiquette. Read on with AsiaRooms.com to get an idea about Malaysian Etiquette.

Many of the etiquettes are followed all over the world. So it would be better if we talked about the specialties of unique etiquettes in Malaysia.

Greeting Etiquette

Whenever you meet an older person or a woman, greet with a slender bow. Higher ranking people or older people should be introduced first, followed by women and men. Western women are supposed to greet Malay men with a nod of their head and a smile. As you enter, leave a place or pass by someone, you should be giving a moderate bow, which gives the expression of "excuse me."

Body Language

The head is considered to be the home of the human soul. One should not touch other people’s top portion of the head. This is especially applicable when you touch children. Malays do not appreciate display of affection in public places. Touching someone from the opposite sex is also avoidable.

Always use your right hand while eating, passing things on or touching people. Passing things on with your left hand is not etiquette. Avoid point at another person or moving objects with your feet, as it is not considered to be a good gesture.

Malays are very soft-spoken and polite. They usually avoid public display of anger, and expect the same from others. More often than not, they will answer you in the affirmative. If you are on a vacation in Malaysia, try to listen to them carefully. Etiquette of Malaysia is quite simple and is full of wonderful gestures. The residents of Malaysia always appreciate good sense of etiquette and reciprocate the same.
