The Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur is, in fact, the first modern sports stadiums built in this fantastic city. The stadium is located in the center of the city. It was built to commemorate Malaysia's freedom from British rule. The term Merdeka Stadium basically means Stadium of Independence. It is thus not only a major sports venue but also one of the biggest tourist attractions of the city.
It is a huge outdoor stadium, which can accommodate around 40,000 people. The stadium was the venue where in the year 1957 on August 31st, the British handed over the powers to the government of the country. A large number of people came to this stadium to witness this grand event. Over the years the stadium was destroyed due to wear and tear. The government decided to build an office complex and entertainment center. However, the people of the city vehemently opposed this idea and hence finally the plan was discarded.
The Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur serves as a venue for a large number of events. The facilities of the stadium allow these events to be conducted in a proper manner. There is huge field, which is surrounded by a well-maintained racing track. The seating arrangements are good and one can get a good view of the stadium. Apart from sports activities, the stadium also serves as avenue for a large number of concerts and cultural festivals. Many local as well as foreign artists have organized live performances and shows in this huge stadium.
The Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur is thus one of the best stadiums of the city. Its historical significance and modern facilities have further accentuated its reputation as a major sports venue in Kuala Lumpur.
