History:
The Malayan railway operation changed its name to Keratapi Tanah Melayu Berhad in the year 1992. This railway system was first developed during the British colonial period. It main use was to transport tin during this period.
Keratapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, Kuala Lumpur controls the 1000 mm gauge railway network in Peninsular Malaysia. It has two main lines as well as several branch lines.The West Coast line operates from Padang Beer in Perlis to Singapore via Butterworth, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. This west coast line operates mainly on the West Coast states of peninsular Malaysia.The East Coast line operates between Gemas and Tumpat. The train also travels to the interior of the area.
There are several other branch lines which run from the two main lines. Some of them are Kuala Lumpur-Port Klang-Pulau Indah, Kuala Lumpur-Sentul, Kempas-Tanjung Pelepas, Kempas-Pasir Gudang and the Pasir Mas-Rantau Panjang branch lines. The total length covered by the network is about 1,699 km.
Keratapi Tanah Melayu runs various intercity train services. Most of the intercity trains run from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station situated in Kuala Lumpur. Two different types of intercity services operating in Malaysia are express trains and mail trains. In the west coast line all trains except one local train all are express trains. The mail trains mainly operate in the East coast line. The Keratapi Tanah Melayu provides those intercity services under the name KTM Antarabandar.
The present services provided by Keratapi Tanah Melayu are as follows:
- Ekonomi Siang is a daily second-class local train which runs between Singapore
and Gemas
- Ekspres Rakyat is a daily express which runs between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
- Ekspres Wau is another daily night express running between Kuala Lumpur and
Tumpat.
- Senandung Langkawi is another night express between Kuala Lumpur and Hatyai.
- Senandung Malam a night express which runs daily between Kuala Lumpur and
Singapore
- Ekspres Sinaran Pagi a morning express which also runs daily from Kuala Lumpur
to Singapore
- Ekspres Sinaran Petang is an afternoon express which runs from Singapore to
Kuala Lumpur.
This railway network also operates some international express like the international
express, which runs daily from Butterworth to Bangkok. There are also some mail
train operating between Tumpat and Singapore.Keratapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, Kuala
