Kuala Lumpur International Airport started its operation from 27th June, 1998 onwards. The plan to build this grand airport began as early as 1990. The airport is maintained and operated Malaysia Airport and was designed by a Japanese architect named Kisho Kurokawa. The entire airport is surrounded by extensive greenery. The entire airport building along with its runaway occupies a space of 100 square kilometers. The airport has two runaways parallel to one another, each being 4000 meters long and 60 meters wide.
The building is huge and consists of a passenger terminal, which consists of a main terminal, a satellite tower and a contact pier. The passenger terminal is designed to allow ample natural light inside. The satellite building houses the five star pan Pacific Kuala Lumpur International Airport Hotel. The also has a low cost carrier terminal. All the major low cost airlines arrive and depart from this airport. There is also a cargo center, which is equipped with the latest technological advancements to handle huge tons of cargo everyday.

There are a total of 216 baggage counters, 8 short-term car park baggage check-in areas, 32 customs counters and 12 baggage carousals. The airport has a good security system and a 3-stage baggage security screening system. Apart from these, one can also find duty-free shops, children's nursery, fitness center, saunas and spas, restaurants and cafes, showers as well as a Muslim prayer room.
