Bank Negara Money Museum

Malaysia - Langkawi - Kuala Lumpur - Penang
The Bank Negara Money Museum in Kuala Lumpur had cooperated in the year 1969 with Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad to commemorate the Kuala Lumpur ’98 XVI Commonwealth Games. It was the first polymer banknote to be issued in the country. Since 1979, it had been sporadically purchasing coins to set up its own Money Museum.

As the Bank receives plenty of visitors each year, including school children and VIPs, the Bank Negara was obliged to display its collection as also preserve the national heritage by having a public museum that would show the evolution of the currency in the country from early to modern times. The Money Museum of Bank Negara is a work of art in itself. It was first opened in April 5, 1989. Every arch – from the carvings on the century old teak entrance door to the panels, shelves and lighting – tells its own story.

The plan to have a museum to demonstrate the Bank’s numismatic collection was realized with its inauguration by Datin Seri Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, the Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s wife. The event coincided with the Bank’s 30th anniversary. The Bank Negara Money Museum remains open everyday excepting Sundays.
