The tin miners used to reside under critical health conditions. The Chinese miners were superstitious mortal souls who depended on the native spell casters. These magicians were believed to have connections with the spirits of the uncharted forest lands. Of6ten the mines were thought to be jinxed by evil spirits which brought ill-luck. Later, the processes of deforestation lead to the severe conditions of health and economy. Under the British colonizers, particularly, under the influence of Frank Swettenham the Chinese miners established their housing and economic wheel of fate.
Frank Swettenham met Yap Ah Loy and developed the entire region for the Chinese community. However, due to the lack of infrastructural facilities the town began to disintegrate. In the contemporary time, cosmopolitan culture, post-modern constructions, the futuristic market places have buried the disturbing past of the Chinatown. The Market Square is one of the convenient locations for both the traders and the tourists. The convergence of the two streams namely Klang and Gombak rivers makes the place soothing and splendid. The docking of ferries, the miniscule waves of the streams, the natural glamour of the day and sweet breeze from the rivers forms the uniqueness of the place.

This place was often dubbed as the “Vatican” of the east. The Sze Ya Temple is nestled between the tall sky kissing futuristic constructions and was built by Yap Ah Loy.
Next to the shrine, resides the Central Market which comprise of labyrinth of alleyways and argumentative streets. Now-a-days, the street peddlers, Chinese stalls, spice markets and lastly the Old China Café are a delight for the tourists.
