History of Langkawi
The last surviving place of the ancient kingdom of Lankasuka is Langkawi which
according to a Chinese records dates back to 500AD. As known from the Liang
Dynasty records the kingdom came to existence when the Hindu King Bagatta paid
his tribute to the Chinese ruler who ruled at that time. But Langkawi is more
famous among the tourists as a land that baths in legends and folktales. The
most famous of all is the one that involves Mahsuri who had to face death in
1355 due to false charges of adultery. The land was shortly attacked by Thais
who looted and plundered the land, thereby destroying all settlements. The
Geography of Langkawi
Located just below the territorial waters of Thailand, is the majestic island
of Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands. Situated on the north -western part
of Peninsular Malaysia, Langkawi is 30 kilometers from Kuala Perils. The islands
are blessed with amazing limestone structures that stirs one's imagination.
Though there are 99 islands the number soars to 104 at the time of high tides
of which most are uninhabited.

around 45000 as estimated in 1990 the population is expected to escalate to
some 60,000. Though it is a multi- racial society, the three main races are
the Malays who are Muslims, Chinese who are Buddhist and Indians who are Hindus.

seasons. Summers are from November to March while the wet season prevails in
