Langkawi offering a mélange of imported and indigenous goods is a shopper's paradise. What makes Langkawi a lucrative shopping destination is that you can shop for an array of duty free-commodities.
You can find most of the shopping sites, stores and malls in and around Kuah, the commercial hub and main town of Lankawi island. Be it modern goods or handicrafts, all are tax-free and are available at very reasonable prices. The largest shopping mall is the Langkawi Fair building which houses 100 retail outlets.
What to shop for- Among the modern goods, the most popular items that are available
at very low prices are cigarettes, beverages and hard drinks including whisky,
rum, beer and cognac. Apart from these mesmerizing fragrances, perfumes, eau
de toilettes, leather, fasionable accessories, designer wears, confectionaries,
cameras, watches and electronic commodities are on sale. If you are interested
in handicrafts and artifacts, then don't miss out cultural souvenirs such as
ornaments and embellishments crafted from crystals, pewter and traditional pottery,
batiks (a kind of Malay garment). There is a number of such handicrafts store
in Kuah, Langkawi International Airport and in Pantai Cenang.
Restrictions- However there is a certain limit on the amount of duty-free goods
you can shop for. There is a duty-free limit for some particular items such
as liquor (up to 1 litre) tobacco (up to 225g), a pair of leather footwear,
apparels (up to three pieces) and cosmetics and items of personal hygiene (excluding
powder or hair products).
A Foreigner who has visited Malaysia for 48 hours or less will receive a duty
exemption up to a limit of RM500 for buying souvenirs, gifts items and things
of personal use.
