The continent of Asia is a melting pot of different cultures, wonders and attractions. Malaysia is situated in the heart of Asia. The communications system in Malaysia is very well developed. The country boasts of extensive roads that connect all major roads and towns on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The Malaysian expressway network is 1,192 kilometres. The express network connects major provinces such as Klang Valley, Johor Bahru and Penang. The North-South Expressway is the major expressway which spans from the northern and the southern tips of Peninsular Malaysia at Bukit Kayu Hitam and Johor Baru respectively. The Expressway is a part of the Asian Highway Network that connects Malaysia to Singapore and Thailand. Roads in the Eastern part of Malaysia and the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia are still relatively undeveloped. The roads are curved and pass through mountainous regions. Majority of the roads are unsealed and gravel roads. Due to the poor condition of these roads, interior residents have been highly dependent on the rivers as their main mode of transportation.
Train services are available in certain parts of the country such as in West Malaysia. The service is operated by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railways) and has extensive railroads that connect all major cities and towns on the peninsular, including Singapore. There is also a short railway in Sabah that is mainly used for freight purposes and operated by North Borneo Railway.
Sea ports are located in Tanjong Kidurong, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Kuantan, Pasir Gudang, Tanjung Pelepas, Penang, Port Klang, Sandakan and Tawau. One can enter the different provinces of Malaysia by sea.
Malaysia is well connected by air. There are numerous world class airports such as the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Bayan Lepas International Airport in Penang, Kuching International Airport and Langkawi International Airport. Most leading international airlines touch down at these airports. There are domestic connections as well. A number of smaller towns have airports as well as small domestic strips in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak. Flight services are also available between East and West Malaysia which is the only option for passengers traveling between the two parts of the country. Malaysia is also the home to the first low-cost carrier in the region, Air Asia. It has Kuala Lumpur as its hub and operates flights around Southeast Asia and China.
