Pulau Redang is located 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu and is the largest of a group of nine protected islands dotting the South China Sea off the Terengganu coast. The islands boast of clear waters and a number of dive sites for diving enthusiasts. The island is sheltered within the Pulau Redang Marine Park. The waters here are very rich in marine life. You can see brilliant hues of coral, anemones and fish at midday when the sun penetrates the sea.
The waters around Pulau Redang are known for two historic shipwrecks. H.M.S. Prince of Wales and H.M.S. Repulse had sunk here during the start of the Second World War. The sinking of these two ships led to the setting of the stage for the Japanese to occupy Malaya.
This Pulau Redang Island is ideal for a number of activities such as snorkelling, swimming, scuba-diving, jungle trekking, boating and canoeing. Fishing is not allowed within a 3.2km radius of the island since Pulau Redang is gazetted as a marine park. The collection of corals and other aquatic life is also strictly prohibited.
The marine park offers an astounding range of accommodation ranging from budget guesthouses to a number of five star resorts. If you visit the Pulau Redang Island for diving purposes it is best that you book a guest house or resort as a part of an organized dive tour. The best way to reach Pulau Redang Island is by boat. You could begin your island hopping adventure by catching a boat at any of the jetties in Kuala Terengganu and Merang. It takes about an hour by boat from Kuala Terengganu and about 50 minutes from Merang by boat.
