Penang Bus service is the most popular mode of transportation in the island. Though Penang is well-connected by rail, sea and air, people prefer the Penang bus service. In the earlier days, Penang boasted an efficient public transport. There were electric trams, trolleybuses and double-deckers that used to ply the streets of Penang. Today, the Penang bus service are generally unsystematic and do not have a reputation of reliability. Therefore, the usage of public transportation is still low, exacerbating the traffic jams in the city during rush hours. There are two main bus terminals for express buses which travel out of the state. One is located at the ferry terminal in Province Wellesley, and a newer one at Sungai Nibong on the island. Penang Yellow Bus Company The Penang Yellow Bus Co. operates an hourly service between the Airport and Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) in the city between 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. daily (Bus No. 83). Shuttle Bus in Penang Penang bus service also includes the Georgetown "shuttle bus”. The city council has provided free shuttle bus services for short intra-city travel to lessen the congestion. In April 2006, the local authorities announced a revamp of the public bus service to bring about a more reliable and efficient network without any visible progress. The Georgetown "shuttle bus” is a free bus service courtesy of the Georgetown Municipal Council. The route starts at the ferry terminal and passes through popular parts of Georgetown, including Komtar and Penang Road. The service runs at regular 12-minute intervals from 7:00am to 7:00pm on Mondays to Fridays and 7:00am to 2:00pm on Saturdays. There is no service on Sundays and public holidays.
