Penang Island is one of the 13 states of the Federation of Malaysia. It is located on the north-west coast of peninsular Malaysia. According to the geography of Penang, the island is bounded on the north and east by the state of Kedah, to the South by the State of Perak and to the west by the Straits of Malacca and Sumatra (Indonesia). Speaking about the geography of Penang, the state is divided into two sections- the Penang Island and the Seberang Perai. Penang Island The Penang Island, located in the Straits of Malacca, is laid across 293 square kilometers. Pulau Jerejak, located in the narrow channel between Penang Island and the mainland, is the biggest islet. It was previously a leper and penal colony, but is now a tourist attraction. The other islets include: Pulau Aman Pulau Kendi(Coral Island) Pulau Rimau Pulau Gedung Pulau Seberang Perai Seberang Perai is also known as Province Wellesley: it is a narrow hinterland of 760 square kilometres on the Malay Peninsula across a narrow channel. Seberang Perai is bordered by Kedah in the north (demarcated by the Muda River) and east, and Perak in the south. Latitude and Longitude of Penang The latitude of “pearl of the orient” - Penang is 5° 25' N, whereas its longitude is 100° 19' E.
