The Temples of Malaysia enhance the beauty of this island country more. They are simply extraordinary and are works of art. Among all, the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple stands out with its striking features and rich past.

According to the age old legend, the credit of constructing this temple goes to a Burmese named Nonya Betong. He purchased the land for the temple from a British, George Layton. The temple is estimated to be around 200 years old and was founded in the year 1803. Earlier, the temple was known as Nandy Moloh Burmese Temple.

  -  The temple enjoys the prestige of being the first Burmese Buddhist Temple in Malaysia.

  -  The Temple owing to its history is enlisted as one of the fifteen State Heritage Sites and to be promoted as a tourist spot for Penang. The decision was taken during the Visit Penang Year of 1988.

  -  The temple has been a seat of meditation for Buddhist monks for years now and the outstanding features are the historical pagoda, a well, the Sime Hall which has a gigantic statue of Lord Buddha and the main Shrine Hall.

  -  A pair of Panca Rupa or Guardian Protectors of the World standing on a replica of the world Globe is an interesting feature of the Temple. These are in reality mythical beasts that have features belonging to various animals.

  -  The tree very integrally associated with Lord Buddha, the Bodhi tree is also present within the temple grounds. A lovely fish pond adds to the charm of the temple.

  -  The Temple in order to promote and preserve the practice of Buddhism in Penang has very recently undertaken measures to update the facilities. A library, special class rooms, dining and visitors halls and monk quarters have been added to the old infrastructure.

  -  The Dharmikarama Burmese Temple is the venue for many festivals and events throughout the year like Water Festival, Festival of Light, ordination of monks, Meditation classes and so on. The Temple is home to a lot of poor and needy to whom food is distributed.

  -  The beautiful and well maintained grounds got the Temple the first prize in Penang state Landscaping and Beautification Program in the year 2001.
