Sun Yat Sens Penang Base

Penang, also nick named as Pulan Pinang is the second smallest state in Malaysia located in the North West coast. The island is also home to a great revolutionary in the history of Malaysia, Dr. Sun Yat Sen, and much better known as the Father of Modern Day China. Penang was his base and his party office for almost two years. The base, still present at No.120 Armenian Street is equivalent to any historical monument in Georgetown and is viewed with reverence till date by the islanders and visitors alike.

Features of Sun Yat Sen’s Penang Base

  -  The base was actually a two storey shop house belonging to a local residing on the Armenian street named Cheah Joo Seng.

  -  The shop house was turned into Sun Yat Sen’s work place and the Tung Meng Hooi Party’s headquarters and served them from 1909 to 1911. The place is equally famous for it was the launching ground for Malaysia’s oldest Chinese newspaper which was used by the revolutionary to promote his party ideas.

  -  Dr Sun Yat Sen and his party was the champion of the Chinese nationalist revolution. The shop house was the venue for the historic ‘Penang Conference’ which resulted in the Great Canton Uprising in 1911.

  -  This historical building has some excellent architectural features. There is a front hall for guests, a more private inner hall, kitchen and toilets situated in the rear part with bedrooms occupying the upper floors. The distinctive feature of the building is its open air courtyard.

  -  The once Central office is also used for exhibition purposes as the place still occupies a special place in the hearts of many patriots and historians. The posters and photographs are well maintained till date.
