Initiated in 1951, the Melbourne International Film Festival has been a consistent success. The festival hosts countless movies of all genres all over the world and the icing on the cake is the wide range of parties and special events that add to the festive mood.

Date: The festival is held at any time between July and August.

Venue: The films are shown in five venues scattered across Melbourne.

Categories: Features, Documentaries, Shorts (this includes animation, experimental, student production), New media.

PARTICIPATING IN THE FESTIVAL

The festival is open to films from all countries and is eager to promote innovative and creative ideas. The Melbourne International Film Festival or MIFF is now open to online applications through the submission of entry forms. For those participating in the Short Film category must enroll by 30th march 2207 whereas for those participating in Feature Film and Documentary category, the deadline is 20th April 2007.

Requirements for participation: 16mm, 35mm, Beta SP. Submissions must have been developed during the 16 months before the festival and must not have previously screened in Victoria, Australia. The Short films must not exceed 30 minutes running time. However, short documentaries can stretch to 60 minutes.

Participation charges: $40 must be paid for Short Film entry. Contact Melbourne International Film Festival, 1st Floor, 207 Johnston Street, Fitzroy 3065, Victoria, Australia for information on the charges for Feature Film entries.

Prizes: a prize money of AUD$35,000 is applicable to all the following categories:

- Experimental films
- Documentary and Animation Short Films
- Best Student Production
- Award for Short Film Promoting Human Rights
- Film Victoria Erwin Rado Award for Best Australian Short Film
- Emerging Australian Filmmaker
- Creative Excellence in an Australian Short Film
