Ancienne Talborjt Agadir

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir

On February 29th, 1960, a killer earthquake almost destroyed the city of Agadir and caused widespread damage. The city bore thousands of causalities and the ancient Kasbah, the hallmark of the old town was destroyed. Like a phoenix from its ashes, the citizens rose in indomitable spirits and started to rebuild the city in 1961. The Ancienne Talborjt is a beautiful garden, overlooking the famous fish market of Agadir. Its lawns were used as burial grounds for the millions of anonymous corpses and as burial grounds fell short of the need at that hour. Ancienne Talborjt is a plateau like elevation located to the west of the main city. A mosque and cenotaph stand on the grounds and provide solace to those lost in grief of their near and dear ones. The green lawns of the mound are the refuge and stand silent testimony to the resilient spirit of the city that drew inspiration from this tragedy and not only rebuilt itself but also has achieved quite a success by becoming a leading tourist attraction in Morocco. Above all the Ancienne Talborjt is an everlasting eulogy to the 15000 people killed by this natural calamity- dutiful citizens and beloved tourists of Agadir.
