The land of Massa is celebrated as a place where ships from Europe would visit; it acted as a port almost in its function. River Massa flows through the land and the land derives its name from the river, which is there from ancient times. Come 1991 a National park was inaugurated at the mouth of the Massa River and was named as the Souss Massa National Park. The Bay of Massa River is sand blocked forming a lake, which runs to the Atlantic just south of the Village of Sidi Rbat only during the high tides. The southern margin of the lake is awash with sand dunes, the northern area is laced with mud banks and land areas infested with Bushy plants generally burned to produce a crude soda ash.
