The Gnaoua Festival, Essaouira is a tribute to the music of the African slaves as it had its origins in the slave community of Africa. The song and dance of the slaves of Senegal, Sudan and Ghana, who were brought to Morocco, traces the roots of Gnaoua. Dedicated to that music, a one week festival takes place in Essaouira which is called the Gnaoua Festival of Essaouira. The Gnaoua music still echoes the pain and pathos of the slaves who were brought to Morocco in the earlier years. If you are really interested to hear the earthy African slave songs then visit Essaouira during the month of June for this week long festival. Essaouira lights up with the beat of the drums and chants reflect the voodoo cult and the dance reminds us of the traditional and wild Africa. It is still a common belief that the Gnaoua songs have a healing power. But more than the religious association, Gnaoua music is always noted worldwide for its unique composition. The Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira continues for a week and draws performing artistes and tourists from all over the town throughout the Medina. Get to hear different musical styles such as Gnaouan, Jazz, earthen Moroccan tunes and many more. Most of the concerts are held in Prince Moulay Hassan Square.
