One of the most pleasant coastal cities in Africa, Essaouria in Morocco is famous for its windsurfing and fishing spots. The windy city has become internationally renowned for its windsurfing contests and attracts windsurfers from all over the world. The ancient red walls of Essaouira enclose its charm with its white washed and blue shuttered houses, art galleries, wood workshops, fishermen and colorful boats. Essaouira is set in front of a group of rocky islands and is surrounded by an expanse of empty sandy beaches and dunes. Everything in the small center is within walking distance and the beaches are very clean. During summer, many people from the big cities come here to escape the hustle-bustle of the cities of Casablanca and Marrakesh. Essaouira is also home to the castle from Jimi Hendrix's song Castles in the Sand - and it is melting into the sea, on a beach, on the outskirts of town. Essaouria is also renowned for its lighthouses. Cap Blanc in Essaouira is one of the prominent lighthouses in entire Morocco. This lighthouse, nestled on a cliff, runs along the coast just a few kilometers from of the mining port called Jorf Lasfar. Cap Blanc in Essaouira attracts hordes of tourists round the year.
