The little fishing town of Essaouira in Morocco is home to long, white sandy beaches and some of the best conditions for windsurfing in entire Africa. Diabat, Sidi Kaouki and Cap Sim are the most popular places for windsurfing in Essaouira. Just on the outskirt of Essaouira is the town of Diabat and its beach. Diabat in Essaouira became famous after a visit from Jimi Hendrix here in the 1960s. Over the years the windsurfers have replaced the hippies of the 60's when Diabat was home to a commune lead by Jimi Hendrix. This long, windswept beach with its ruined fort, located about 5 km from Essaouira, is an ideal spot for romantic walks or running, but unfortunately, not for swimming. Strong winds and currents prevent you from swimming. This outstanding beach at Diabat offers spectacular sea and mountain views. Diabat in Essaouira is an empty, concrete Berber village that is practically devoid of attractions barring the Hendrix ruin and a Hendrix Cafe. Diabat in Essaouira is best visited in the early morning via taxi. After the trip return to Essaouira via a short and very romantic walk on the beach past the castle in the sand of Hendrix fame.
