Essaouira Fishing Port Essaouira

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir
Essaouira, a charming fishing port nestled on a peninsula, is a port of call in the Antiquity. One of the most fascinating coastal cities in Africa, Essaouria in Morocco is renowned for its windsurfing and fishing spots. Essaouira Fishing Port is one of the main fishing centers in Morocco, and a prime attraction in Essaouira. Essaouira was the first commercial fishing port in Morocco, which was built around 1875 AD.

No trip to Essaouira can be complete without a walk around the Essaouira fishing port to look at all the boats and the busy fishermen. The best place to see the fish is the Government Fish Weigh Station and Auction House, also known as the Fish Market. All the fish that are caught by the Essaouira fleet are brought to the market to be weighed, taxed and then sold. If you visit the port late in the afternoon, when lots of boats come in, you will find the fish market packed with fish and fishermen. The auctions are held in the center of the big room. Each batch of fish is clearly marked with weight, with the buyers standing outside the circle yelling, while a man wearing a white jacket takes the bids.
