Essaouira City walls and Gates Essaouira

One of the most attractive coastal cities in Africa, Essaouira in Morocco is eminent for its windsurfing and fishing spots. The windy city has become internationally renowned for its windsurfing contests and attracts windsurfers from all parts of the world. Within the ancient red walls of Essaouira lies its peculiar charm. You will be greeted by a pleasant visual of white washed and blue shuttered houses, art galleries, wood workshops, fishermen and colorful boats. The city walls and gates of Essaouira, as well, are integral to the charisma of this scenic town.

Essaouira is much about colors. Most of its city walls are painted in white, while the gates are often painted in other colors, usually in blue or yellow. Over the years, masons and painters have slowly developed a distinct art that can only be experienced by walking past the city walls and gates of Essaouira.

A small town encircled by a wall, Essaouira has walls that have several gates. Each gate leads to one of the main avenues of Medina, the local name for the ancient town. There is a particular gate that leads to the port, while another gate is one of the main entries to the old citadel. Recently Essaouira has grown outside its walls, but originally all people lived in the Medina.
