Skala du Port Essaouira

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir
Located at the end of Essaouira Ramparts is the epicenter of Essaouira town's defense - Skala du Port in Essaouira. Situated near fishing harbors, the Skala du Port houses imposing cannons, and is a small fortified zone to the west of Essaouira.

Skala du Port is an ancient Portuguese tower, which dominates the entrance of the port in Essaouira. It is an impressive sea bastion with a number of bronze European cannons on top and a grand view of the ocean splashing against the rocks. Below are the workshops of carpenters who primarily work with thuja-wood of the evergreen conifers. It is here where Orson Welles shot some scenes for his film Othello.

Down by the harbor, Skala du Port in Essaouira offers picturesque views over the fishing port and the Île de Mogador. You can also look back at the walled medina amidst the wheeling seagulls, and you can be sure that there will be a number of sea birds.

From Skala du Port in Essaouira you can also go and visit the nearby little museum Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, adorned with pictures of the old Essaouira and exhibit inlaid work and costumes. The historic Essaouira Ramparts nearby is also a very popular tourist destination in Essaouira that is worth a visit.
