Fondouk Tsetouanien Fez

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir
A fondouk is a kind of an inn or a storehouse and Fondouk Tsetouanien in Fez received its name from the Tetouan traders who accommodated themselves in these lodges. This is the original and lifelike fundouk in the medina. With the myriads of clumsy balconies, the ground floor scales and the rug dealers, it is almost a real version of the fondouks in the Fortuny Paintings. In the middle ages, the fondouk used to be a place of great revelry and fun and it still retains some of its old vibrant essence even today. It is open throughout the year for 24 hours a day. It is also popular to the tourists as an architectural site and is located in Fez el Bali.

The ground floor of this place was used as a bazaar while the top floors were used as the sleeping quarters. Since the building is a pretty high one, the view from its top is absolutely splendid. The leather traders use this place to dry, cut and treat the leathers and you can also purchase excellent leather bags from the leather dealers at a very cheap rate. The appearance of the place is not at all sophisticated but rather Moorish and rugged that suits the overall ambience of the locality.
