Moulay Abdellah Quarter Fez

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir
The Moulay Abdellah Quarter is located on the Fej el Djedid Street in Fez. The Merenids constructed it as the Government seat to control the subjects. However, when Rabat became the Capital of Morocco, the place lost all its importance. It later became a red light area, filled with dance halls and was closed to the foreign tourists for a long time. However, this ancient place still smacks of an exotic past.

Things to see in Moulay Abdellah Quarter: The place is famous for its two mosques. Infact, there are plenty of Mosques all around Fez.

  -   Moulay Abdellah Mosque: This Mosque is a pristine one and has vertical green stripes all over its body.

  -   Great Mosque Abu Haq: The Meredin Sultan built this mosque in 1276.

Other things to see in the neighborhood:

The Mellah: the Mellah was built in the 15th century when the Jews were ousted from their previous ghetto near Bab Guissa. Ornamented balconies and forged iron windows characterize the Mellah. The place is named after the Arabic word for salt, which is "melh" and refers to the old practice of the Jews of salting the heads of the bandits who were killed before they were publicly displayed. However there are no more Jews living in that place any longer.
