Sahrij Medersa Fez

Morocco - Essaouira - Fez - Marrakech - Agadir
This school is one of the oldest in Fez and was built in 1321 by the Merenids. Beautiful green and white minarets characterize the school and it still exists in all its grandeur. The courtyard is paved in marble that shines brilliantly in the sunlight. Perhaps you can still hear the echoes of the children's voices chanting their lessons in the Arabic language. The medersa is named after the pool called Sharij on which the terrace is centered. The dark colored cedar carvings lend a rich hue to the place. Koranic studies are carried in the Medersa and the Kairaouine Mosque sponsors the studies. The place is open daily from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm and again from 3.00 pm to 6.30 pm. Visitors are free to enter the Sahrij Medersa at the cost of 10 DH. If you visit the place in late afternoon you will be delighted to find several birds chirping all around the Medersa.
