History of the university: The university was established in 859 by a lady called Fatima Al Fihri and was actually maintained by the sultans and the archive consisted of manuscripts like the famous Mut'ah of Malik which was inscribed on gazelle parchment. However the mosque soon developed into a religious institution which taught many subjects like the natural sciences.
Subjects Taught: The University taught many subjects like maths, physics, chemistry and foreign languages like Quaran and Fiqh, grammar, rhetoric, logic, history, geography and music. It is one of the leading spiritual centers in the world. The university also finds place in the great Guinness Book of World Records. Some notable scholars are Abu Abullah Al Sati, Ibn Rashid Al Sabti and Abu Madhab Al Fasi. The university also teaches Islamic Jurisprudence. The university has played an integral role in cultural relations between Islamic world and European world in the middle ages. Pope Sylvester II played an important role in the introduction of Arabic numerals and Zero.
Thus the university is hailed by many to be an important seat of learning in
the world.
