Geography of Marrakech

The beautiful city of Marrakech is among the sixteen provinces of Morocco. It is known as Tensift-El Haouz in Arabic. Marrakech is located in the central part of Morocco covering an expansive area of 31,160 km² with a population of 3,102,652 according to the 2004 census. The geography of Marrakech makes an interesting reading with a presence of varied landscapes.

The region of Marrakech is divided into 7 different provinces and prefectures. Each unique in itself portraying its very own characteristics. To explore the geography of Marrakech one has to look into the detailing of its constituent parts.

The usual geographical positioning of Marrakech shows that the place is located at 31° 36´N latitude and 8° 01´W longitude. The city is located at an altitude of 460m above the sea level.

The basic geography of the place is described by the beautiful Atlas Mountains on the foothills of which Marrakech is located. The city is has stretches of very arid land punctuated by striking gardens.
