Ali Ben Youssef Mosque Marrakech

The Ali Ben Youssef Mosque, Marrakech which happens to be the oldest mosque in Marrakech was built in the 12th century. The Ali Ben Youssef Mosque, Marrakech is one of the oldest surviving mosques in Marrakesh. When it was built in the 12th century, by the Almoravid sultan having the same name, it was much bigger. But the archetype building was tarnished by the Almohads when they subverted the Almoravids. Succumbing to popular demand it had to be rebuilt in the 18th century in merenid style. In keeping with Muslim tradition the Ali Ben Youssef Mosque, Marrakech is not open to non-Muslims.

The latest refurbishment was executed in the Merenid style. It is one of the most noteworthy monuments in Marrakesh.
Adjacent to the Ali Ben Youssef Mosque, Marrakech is the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa, a law-abiding place meant for meditation which is neatly adorned with some stunning examples of stucco ornamentation. No longer put to use, this place was at one point of time the house of the largest Koranic School in North Africa.
