Asilah, Morocco is an ancient city. It has been in existence since circa 1500 BC and has served as an important trading port for the Phoenicians who were the first to settle here. Later it was captured by the Carpathians, the Byzantines, and the Romans. The main reason behind the attacks by these races was location of Asilah. The Arabs invaded around the 9th century while the Portuguese took control of the town in 1471 AD. Asilah, Morocco is situated in the north of the country. It is a place for artists. Their work is manifested all over the city in the form of paintings on house walls. Today it is a beautiful city resembling scenic places of Greece with a blue and white color scheme of the houses. Asilah in Morocco is enclosed by defensive walls erected by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Behind these walls the city was in a state of ruins till 1978 when Mohammed Benaissa came forward with his ideas to save the ancient city. Some of the major attractions of the city include the Bab El Homer, the Bab El Kasaba, the El Jamra Tower, the Palais de Raisouli, the Grand Mosque, the Town Museum and the Town Church. Asilah, Morocco is situated on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, 42 kilometers southeast of the town of Tangier. It is home to a number of beautiful beaches. The beauty of the town is enhanced by huge farmlands that surround the city. Today it has its place as one of the main Morocco popular destinations.
